Chapter Six

Hang Time

How high can basketball take the dunk?

It’s one of the most powerful images in all of sports. Rocketing down court, covering twenty feet of floor with each bounce of the ball, Michael Jordan reaches the top of the key and switches from ground assault to an airborne bombing run. With one last glance at the basket to line himself up, he launches skyward. Flashbulbs pop by the hundreds as he covers the nineteen feet to the front of the rim, the ball held high over his head. Back on Earth, his startled opponents look upward and gape as “His Airness” floats over them. Defending the basket with anything less than a shoulder-fired missile is impossible at this point, and they can only watch, helpless and awestruck, as Jordan finally begins his descent, legs tucked under him like landing gear, and rams the ball through the hoop with such force that it slams into the floor.
